My father and brother had always made this business of fooling the fish look easy, but I knew from my limited experience that the delicacy and timing required to properly present an artificial fly takes practice and patience. Then there was the rest of it: learning to read the river for the best trout lies; learning to match the hatch. Last year I decided that a crash course was in order. Time and time again I’ve lost nice fish (tarpon, jacks, and bull reds) because of leader failure. One thing to consider when preparing for your next jetty or beach outing is to take the time to test the lb. strength of your leaders. If you have never done so you will be surprised how much 10-12 lbs of pressure really is. Not only will you know whether or not your leaders and knots are to breaking strength, but also you will have confidence in knowing your limits the next time you hook up with a big fish. There are several ways to check your leaders, you can use a boga grip, or set up a pulley with a bucket of water or gravel.

We are never going to be good as our violins, golf clubs, and fly rods CAN be…but we can aspire!! Go EASY on the rod’s grip, especially on the return stroke. Use a firm grip to get the fly line off/ out of the water and heading up and away behind you. As soon as it is time to bring your line forward, imagine that your cork grip has just turned into a cactus! You would not hold a cactus tight, right? You have to keep any extra juice in your forward cast from making it down the rod’s sensitive tip and opening up your loop to more wind! Just move forward and down with the most fined grained acceleration possible to keep your rod loaded. You have to adopt the mindset that your forward stroke IS only a loop former and a directional for your cast, NOT A POWER MOVE!! Coming hard forward is baitcasting! If I am upwind from you and I can smell burnt cork, you MIGHT be holding your rod too hard…..

Through a series of chance encounters over several years, fishing guide and journalist Brandon Shuler unearthed multiple drafts of a nearly finished manuscript by an almost forgotten Texas sports writer, Hart Stilwell. Titled “Glory of the Silver King,”the manuscript vividly captured the history of tarpon and snook fishing on the Texas and Mexico Gulf Coast from the 1930s to the end of Stilwell’s life in the early 1970s. $24.95
