Johnson City, Texas
Johnson City is a city in Blanco County Texas and is near the center of the Texas Hill Country. It is the county seat of Blanco County. The latest census shows the population of Johnson City to be around 2000, though many residents live outside the city limits. It was the hometown of President Lyndon B. Johnson and was founded by James Polk Johnson, nephew of Samuel E. Johnson Sr. and cousin to President Johnson. It is also the home of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park operated by the National Park Services.
The Blanco County Courthouse is in downtown Johnson City.
This metallic bovine creation, located in Johnson City, TX, is the work of eco-artist and sculptor Bettye Hamblen. Part of a series of sculptures by the artist, the bull is fashioned from recycled car and motorcycle parts, and is the fifth in the Texas Longhorn Bull collection. The picture was taken by Jana Walker. Known as Palladin, the bull was created from stainless steel and chrome auto parts using both hot and cold bending methods. Hamblen used specific welding techniques that should prevent corrosion of the welded points over time, while the carbon steel is allowed to rust, transforming the sculpture through the years.
Another favorite in Johnson city is Whittington’s Jerky Store. Known far and wide in the Texas Hill Country as the “best jerky ever made anywhere.” Their gift shop on Highway 281 just South of town is a “must stop.”
The famous “Weather Rock” in front of Whittington’s Store is sure to be an acurate predictor of the current weather.
